Because being evangelical means never having to say youíre sorry.
Being evangelical means itís not us.
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Revd Paul Bayes
People who call themselves evangelical in the US seem to be uncritically accepting [of the 'daft twerp'].
Some quite significant so-called evangelical leaders are uncritically supporting people.
In ways that imply they are colluding or playing down the seriousness of things.
Which in other parts of their lives [they] would see as really important.
He added: Some of the things that have been said by religious leaders seem to collude.
With a system that marginalises the poor, a system which builds walls instead of bridges.
A system which says people on the margins of society should be excluded.
A system which says weíre not welcoming people any more into our country.
Whenever people say those kinds of things, they need to be able to justify.
That theyíre saying those things as Christians, and I do not believe itís justifiable.
The Compelling TRUTH
First Fruits Today
The concept of first fruits is sometimes used by preachers today.
To encourage their parishioners to give an offering above and beyond tithing.
The first fruit itself may vary:
- First paycheck of a new job or the first paycheck of the year
- Portion earned from the sale of something
- Portion of each subsequent paycheck
- Take a Sabbath the first day of the week, and/or have a quiet time in the morning
The reasons stated for giving a first fruits offering also vary:
- To show sacrificial faith that God will provide
- To give thanks that God did provide
- To "sow a seed" so that God will make the giver rich
- To ensure God will bless the giver's plans for the new year
The problem is, the first fruits offering was for the Jews for a specific purpose.
Nowhere does the New Testament mention that the church.
Is required or even encouraged to give a first fruits offering.
Like tithing, giving to the church is left up.
To the personal convictions of the individual believer.
There is no blanket policy for giving.
Christmas letter to Jesus
I know where Jesus can get it!
The USA already has 4,000 nuclear bombs and only needs about 1,000 to destroy the earth.
But the USA is going to spend $1.6 Trillion on new nuclear bombs.
That are smaller and more useable
Actually many will be dial a dose so they can be really BIG.
Or somewhat smaller than Hiroshima.
I just donít see that money as well spent.
I am betting Jesus agrees with me.
So, Jesus, whaddya say?
It is kind of like chasing the money changers out of the temple.
New and Improved Nuclear Bombs ought to be as offensive to your father.
And the money changers --
Maybe even more so --
After all the money changers were not threatening to destroy.
Your fatherís entire creation, but the nuke bombers are.
Letís chase those new fangled money changers out of your temple!
