Back in 1955 and 1956, VMF-312 was deployed to NAS Rosey Roads. The famous Checkerboard squadron was providing CAS (close air support) for the grunts practicing amphibious landings on Vieques Island, PR.
While on liberty in San Juan, we enjoyed 10 cent rum & cokes and dancing with the beautiful ladies of that glorious city of charm.
After the forced departure of the USMC from its training site on Viegues Island there was no longer any need for the air station at Rosey Roads - no training landings, no need for CAS. Hence, Rosey Roads was closed. The locals howled and whined about that closer. This closer cost many jobs for the locals. They hadn't thought about this closer. Be careful of what you ask for ....
The control tower and hanger at Rosey Roads. Note prop job aircraft parked on the apron.
