Ian Fleming & James Bond and Mickey Spillane & Mike Hammer.
While in the USMC, Mickey Spillane and his Mike Hammer were the greatest influence on my desire for reading. I didn't care much for reading while I was in high school. If it weren't for Classic Comic Books, I wouldn't have been able to write a book report for my literature classes.
However, I found John Steinbeck on my own. During the summer of 1950, I found his book "To A God Unknown." I liked the novel and bought another of his books at the local drug store - "Cannery Row." In the fall, when I went back to high school, the teacher's reading list include the two Steinbeck novels. Damn! Steinbeck had even been awarded a Pulitzer Prize for literature. I had never heard of him. BTW: I dog-eared the "best" pages for my buddies.
