we have encountered speak English. People from other countries learn to speak English .... as well as other languages. More so than do Americans learning to speak other languages.
I found the more proficient I became with German, the more I enjoyed Germany when I lived there (1962-68). When Linda & I visited old Communist East Germany in August 2017, I attempted to speak German with the natives. They were quite surprised that an American would try to speak German with them .... they were more friendly ... more than just being courteous to us. Bitte, Ich wuenschen ein bier. Danke schoen.
