In Response To: My gg-grandfather, Phineaus Stimson, from Weston, MA - strange .... (MillRatUSMC aka Ricardo)
My mum, her two sisters and my grandparents immigrated from Aberdeen, Scotland in 1921. Granka had fought in France during WWI. When he returned home, there was no employment, so the Scottish government offered him a cash bonus or free passage to Nova Scotia, Canada. He took the free passage and ended up in Sydney, Nova Scotia. He immigrated and moved his family to Milford, NH in 1923. He was a stone cutter and obtained employment in the granite quarries in Milford (The Granite Capital of the Granite State). Mum met dad and here I am ......
Phineaus Stimson was from Weston, MA. He was of English heritage. I don't know any of his ancestors, but I'm familiar with his son Phineaus, Jr. who moved to Milford, NH and his grandson Henry C. Stimson (my great-grandfather). Henry fought at the Battle of Port Hudson, LA - May-June, 1863. He contracted malaria and dysentery from which he died.
The plaque is at the entrance to the Milford Town Hall. Milford had more KIAs in the Civil War than all of the other USA's wars added together.
